Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience in technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; geology or geology technology; or as a surveyor or a drafter;

OR graduation from high school and one year of qualifying experience;

OR graduation from a high school technical education program in aeronautics, architectural drafting, chemistry, electricity, electronics, mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems, or computer circuitry;

OR 18 college semester credit hours in any combination of the following: engineering, geology, environmental science, natural or physical science, drafting, mathematics, or surveying.

Duties Description Position Description
The Lake Assessment and Monitoring Section (LMAS) is part of the Division of Water’s (DOW) Bureau of Water Assessment and Management (BWAM). LMAS is responsible for implementing several monitoring programs, limnological research, data analysis and interpretation, technical support, and public communications. Monitoring programs include the Lakes Classification and Inventory (LCI), Citizen Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP), the New York Harmful Algal Bloom System (NYHABS), Groundwater, and Sediment Analysis and Management Programs.

Primary Areas of Responsibility
An Environmental Engineering Technician 1 position was requested in order to address a priority identified by the DOW to support lake monitoring and research needs. The duties and responsibilities for the position are directly targeted to meeting this need. These areas of responsibility are outlined below.

Provide support to the Lake Management and Assessment Section including:
1) Office Related
a. Assist the senior staff in the lakes section with data management and reporting for the LCI program, CSLAP, and NYHABS.
b. Assist the LCI program staff with preparing for the LCI field season including prepping materials, determining site access, and ordering supplies.
c. Assist the CSLAP program staff with volunteer trainings and audits including prepping materials, determining training locations, and coordination with volunteers.
d. Assist with reviewing harmful algal bloom reports during the recreational season to support NYHABS .
e. Assist with other LMAS and DOW needs as appropriate and available.
2) Field Related
a. Participate in all training necessary to conduct sampling and operate vessels.
b. Assist in LCI field surveys and sampling of lakes.
c. Assist in the operation and maintenance of electronic and other equipment used to monitor water quality.
d. Assist CSLAP program staff with volunteer training sessions and field audits.
e. Support other lake and/or stream monitoring and research activities conducted or coordinated by the DOW, as appropriate and available.

Unique Duties
• The candidate must be willing to work long hours beyond the typical workday and participate in overnight travel during the field sampling season, have the ability to carry heavy equipment including hand carry boats and sampling gear for up to a half mile over rough terrain, and be comfortable working from a canoe or other small boat in a variety of environments, including remote ponds and polluted urban lakes.
• Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
• Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions.
• Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required.
• Must be able to lift and move objects up to 30 pounds.
• Must obtain certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercrafts within one month of hire.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 30 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
