Minimum Qualifications Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree and three years of professional research experience in the field of Criminal Justice; or a Master's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field may substitute for one year of experience; a PH.D in Criminal Justice or related field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include experience designing and conducting criminal justice research; proficiency using SPSS and/or Stata software to merge and analyze complex datasets and validate the quality of data; and experience summarizing findings in narrative form. The preferred candidate will have a Master's degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field.
Duties Description Under the director of a supervisor, the incumbent will conduct social science research analysis related to the criminal justice system and criminology. Research may include the study of the characteristics and behavior of incarcerated individuals and individuals under community supervision, population trends, Parole Board activity, the violation process, and recidivism. Research may evaluate the impact of legislation, policy, and agency initiatives and operations.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
*Use a wide range of research methods and data sources to plan, design, and conduct research on criminal justice system activity and behavior, including developing research questions, identifying an appropriate research design and methodology, and interpreting findings;
*Design surveys, collect and evaluate associated survey data;
*Identify and address data anomalies, trouble shoot, and address methodological and analytical issues;
*Use analytic and statistical software packages including SPSS and Stata to analyze existing DOCCS data with advanced statistical techniques;
*Present tabular and graphical data in Excel, and develop data visualizations showing criminal justice statistics and trends, using Tableau;
*Prepare formal statistical reports which describe study objectives, research methodology, data collection and key findings to inform agency managers and executive staff and for possible publication on the DOCCS website.
