Duties Description 1. Assist the Environmental Educator (EE) in writing curriculum, setting up materials, teaching, and cleaning up after programs, workshops, and interpretive hikes.
2. Support virtual EE by planning and creating social media content, editing videos, creating Agents of Discovery missions, and assisting with other educational technology programming.
3. Assist the EE with the development of program materials. Materials must be prepared in a timely fashion before scheduled programs and must be stored in an organized fashion. Documents required to support our programming must be maintained and organized.
4. Assist with marketing events via online platforms as well as help to design quarterly newsletters and program flyers.
5. Assist with maintenance of all EE gardens: the pollinator garden at the nature center, the planted boxes in the breezeway, and the educational plot at historic Gericke Farm. Maintenance includes pulling and discarding weeds, watering plants, and harvesting ripe vegetables and fruits.
6. Work with the NYC region’s stewardship team to monitor and remove invasive species from State Parks and support other stewardship efforts.
7. Assist with special events and initiatives in other State Parks throughout the NYC region. Represent Clay Pit Ponds at special events at other sites, outside of State Parks.
8. Assist with general Nature Interpretive Center upkeep including, but not limited to cleaning floors, bathrooms, and glass; design and create new exhibits with the approval of the EE and Park Management; handle and care for live animals in the nature center (snake, turtle, millipedes) and at the farm (chickens).
9. Willingness to support Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve operations team and other project based work at State Parks in the New York City Region as needed.
Additional Comments • One year of environmental education experience or related experience OR a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field (preferred)
• Applicants must possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license as a term and condition of employment
• Applicants must be willing to work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions for up to the entire workday.
• Applicants must be available to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Typical work schedule is 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays.
• Applicants must be willing to handle and care for live animals.
• Applicants must be able to lift at least 30 pounds and hike for 2 miles at a time.
• Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be willing and able to speak publicly to audiences of all ages, from infants to adults.
• Applicants must possess strong organizational skills.
• Applicants fluent in Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, or Cantonese are encouraged to apply.
