Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture.
One year of technical forestry experience in one or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Preferred qualification:
Ability to identify trees of New York
Ability to determine cause of tree damage
Knowledge of forest insects and diseases as well as general forest health trends
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Capable of working in a productive and independent manner with minimal supervision
Capable of working alone or with another person

Duties Description As a forest health technician, you will work in the field to inspect tree damage and survey for target invasive species. You will collect valuable data on insect, disease, and other forest disturbances. The program will use these data to monitor, analyze, report on, make management decisions, and to advise public and private land managers.

Specific job duties will include:
Use various types of insect traps to conduct early detection surveys
Measure stand characteristics and tree health in established long-term monitoring plots
Conduct surveys for various forest pests using established protocols
Identify cause of tree or forest damage for landowners and land managers
Manage forest pests as applicable
Provide technical guidance on proper forest management
Conduct ground verification of forest damage as mapped by aerial survey
Provide outreach and education to the public on forest health issues

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

This is a temporary, hourly position funded through 03/31/2023. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date which may be prior to date indicated. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
