Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s Degree and two years of professional research experience in the appropriate field, or a Master’s Degree in the appropriate field and one year of professional research experience in that field. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Also required are strong statistical and data management skills along with the ability to travel as required.

Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preferred fields of study are physical, atmospheric or environmental sciences and mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable, but not a requirement. Preference will be given to candidates proficient in Excel and R with a strong track record in project management, applied instrumentation development and environmental monitoring.

Duties Description Under the technical and administrative supervision at the Research Scientist level in BAQS (RS2), the incumbent will be responsible for the following activities:

• Manage, quality assure, verify, and produce reports relating to air quality monitoring audit, precision, and other quality control data that are reported to the EPA’s Air Quality System (AQS) in fulfillment of state and federal regulations. Reports and associated data will be used to ensure that the monitoring data are of the highest quality and meet agency data quality indicators and objectives for representativeness, comparability, sensitivity (i.e., detection limit), precision, bias, and completeness. Work with field staff to ensure that data have been recorded, transmitted, and processed correctly to ultimately meet the needs of a wide range of data users.

• Assist in work to evaluate findings from hyperlocal data collection. This includes deploying additional sensors or other instrumentation as needed to determine the source of elevated readings. Results will be communicated with citizens in written reports and public meetings. Field work and overnight travel are requirements for this position.

• Research and evaluate new air pollution measurement technologies. Keep up-to-date in the scientific literature on the latest developments, in particular, in the area of sensors and citizen science as well as methods to incorporate automation and remote instrument operation. Where possible, collocate next generation instruments with existing equipment to evaluate accuracy and reliability. Assist in the documentation and publishing of findings that are useful to fellow professionals in the field.

• Must be able to prepare detailed, technically accurate, well written reports.
• Must possess good written and verbal communication skills to present results and analysis.
• Must have knowledge and experience in the use of higher-level computer programs.
• Must be able to travel to meetings and conferences.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required.
