Minimum Qualifications Transfer Qualifications: Any Current Senior Recreation Therapist
Anyone eligible for a 70.1 transfer.

Promotional Opportunities: Anyone currently reachable on the Civil Service list.

Provisional Appointment: In the event that there is not a valid eligible list, candidates who
meet the qualifications below may be qualified for a provisional
appointment.

You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:
as a Recreation Therapist, Recreation Therapist (Spanish Language), Recreation Therapist (Art), Recreation Therapist (Dance), or Recreation Therapist (Music).
For all other qualified individuals, candidates must have: Either. a master's degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or drama therapy;
Or. a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation, creative arts therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, or drama therapy, AND one year of post-degree professional experience in planning and administering a therapeutic program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals who are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for alcoholism and substance abuse;
Or. a bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, adaptive physical education, art, dance, music, drama, recreation education with a concentration in therapeutic recreation, or recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation AND two years of post-degree professional experience as described above;*
Or. have one year of post-degree professional experience as described above AND be one of the following:
1. Certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
2. Registered with the American Art Therapy Association as an Art Therapist.
3. Registered with the American Dance Therapy Association as a Dance Therapist.
4. Certified by the American Music Therapy Association as a Music Therapist.
5. Registered by the National Association for Drama Therapy as a Registered Drama Therapist.
Conditions of Employment:
If three or fewer interested promotional candidates respond to this notice, the agency may, at its discretion, nominate a qualified employee for non-competitive promotion under the provisions of Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. If certified by Civil Service, mandatory re-employment list candidates must be considered first for appointment to this title.

As of February 26, 2022 all OPWDD employees assigned to this location must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. There is no testing option for employees assigned to this location in lieu of vaccination.

Duties Description Duties include but not limited to:

1. Assess individuals for appropriate recreational, inclusion activities.
2. Plans, develops, implements recreational activities and programs including but not limited to sports, exercise, dance, drama, music, art and social activities.
3. Coordinates recreation therapy activities with those of other disciplines or therapy programs for assigned individuals
4. Administers individual and group therapeutic recreation programs as applicable.
5. Modifies activities consistent with the function level, physical ability and clinical needs of the individuals in the program site.
6. Orders and maintains recreational supplies and equipment for the program inclusive of the needs of the individuals.
7. Participates in the treatment process such as attending meetings, performing any follow up necessary within the discipline as needed
8. Review records for documentation of recreation activities using the electronic system and maintaining records in accordance with program standards and requirements.
9. Will supervise recreation workers and plans with other recreation therapists assigned to residential homes in the Brooklyn DDSOO to enhance inclusion experiences.
10. Will report in writing to residential director an overall summary of progress and needs for the development of effective treatment in the DDSO for individuals’ recreation program plans in the day habilitation center and residential operations within BDSOO.
11. Participate in other assigned tasks such as the monthly Self Advocacy Committee and any special project
12. Incumbent will schedule recreation meetings with recreation therapist and recreation workers within the DDSO and provide feedback to recreation personnel and director of residential services.
