Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current DOH employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as a Public Health Nutritionist 1; OR New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title at or above Grade 20 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law by meeting the Open Competitive minimum qualifications listed below.
Public Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications (Provisional Opportunity):
A. You must be a Registered Dietitian (RD)/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) currently registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
AND
B. you must have two years of full-time professional experience, after successful completion of the Registration Examination for Dietitians, in the field of nutrition or dietetics.
Substitution: A Master's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Health, Public Health, Public Administration, Health (Care/Services) Administration, Nutrition Education, Health Education, Community Health, Health Care Policy and Management, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work/Social Welfare, Human and Social Services, Early Childhood Education, or Public Policy may be substituted for one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have progressively responsible professional work experience in a large, multi-faceted public health nutrition program and will possess excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills. The candidate will also have a strong command of public health as it relates to child and maternal nutrition and the ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities.
Duties Description "The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) offers nutrition education, breastfeeding support, referrals, and a variety of nutritious foods to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum women, infants, and children up to age five to promote and support good health.
Under the supervision of the state Outreach Coordinator, the Public Health Nutritionist (PHN) 1 will develop, manage, and evaluate WIC program services aimed at increasing enrollment and participation in WIC, with a focus on certification, access to services, program messaging, customer service, clinic flow, and other program support activities. The PHN 1 will interpret federal regulations, develop and implement policies and guidance, and provide technical assistance to state and local agency staff. The incumbent will participate in program planning for WIC and user acceptance testing and will monitor reports/data to identify trends and areas for improvement. The PHN 1 will also collaborate with internal and external program partners and conduct presentations at meetings, both in-person and virtually.
Additional Comments "Permanent or provisional, full-time, appointment. Travel to areas not served by public transportation is required (5%). Transfer candidates, you may be asked for a Social Security Number to verify your transfer eligibility. Provisional opportunities are pending canvass outcome.
