Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications for provisional appointment:
You must be a qualified employee of the NYS DEC and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55b/55c service as a Supervising Environmental Conservation Officer or Environmental Conservation Investigator 2.
One year of service as a Supervising Environmental Conservation Officer or Environmental Conservation Investigator 2.
There is currently no eligible list for this position, therefore, if no more than three qualified individuals are interested, it may be possible to make a permanent appointment via non-competitive promotion.
Duties Description As a Chief Environmental Conservation Officer, you would head a regional enforcement program or special unit and would direct and supervise the activities of environmental law enforcement personnel in order to provide law enforcement services meeting local needs consistent with departmental goals and policies. You would coordinate investigative activities with other divisions within DEC; act as liaison with local law enforcement agencies; represent the department in meetings with local officials, agencies, and groups; prepare operational plans; and monitor all expenses.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
