Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive service as a Museum Scientist 3.

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must meet ONE of the following criteria:
1. A bachelor’s in geology or related field AND four years of professional experience in geology
2. A Master of Science (M.S) in geology or related field AND three years of professional experience in geology
3. A doctoral degree in geology or related field AND one year of professional experience in geology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• A Ph.D. in geology
• Research experience in economic geology related to New York State
• Well-established field and analytical skills in geology
• Experience working with archived/museum geology collections
• A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications in geology
• Involvement in educational outreach
• Ability to externally fund research and collections care through grants and/or other sources
• Certification as or willingness to become a licensed professional geologist in NY
• Supervisory experience

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 3 position in economic geology in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 4 or higher, the incumbent will serve as a scientist and curator within the State Museum’s Geology program. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Continue a well-established program of geological field research (e.g., geologic mapping, targeted sample collection, oversight of drill core acquisition) and laboratory research related to economic geology, design and implement a specific research program focused on New York’s economic geology and broader geologic history that meets the highest professional standards. This research will include utilizing the Museum’s economic geology collection;
• Curate the Museum’s economic geology collection. The incumbent is responsible for building the intellectual integrity of the collection, expanding the Museum’s holdings according to Museum and discipline standards, and ensuring proper physical care of the collection;
• Establish state-wide external working relationships (e.g., other state agencies, commercial mines) with those involved in the economic geology field in New York;
• Oversee the development of competitive grant and other funding proposals to extramural sources (e.g., USGS, National Science Foundation, National Park Service) to solicit support for collections, research, and educational programs as well as serving and participating as required matching cost-share for cooperative funding opportunities with federal and state agencies;
• Supervise subordinate staff, including lower-level museum scientists, technicians, interns, volunteers, and students in properly managing, curating, and researching the economic geology collection;
• Prepare research findings and reports for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, maps, technical reports, monographs, books, and professional presentations;
• Participate in exhibit development and planning;
• Participate in the development and enactment of public and educational programs to meet the Museum’s internal and/or community-oriented goals and may take responsibility for their implementation. These programs include participation in the Museum’s Earth Science Workshop for teachers and administrators in K-12 institutions, production of educational documents as well as live, in-person and/or pre-recorded lectures, and field trips;
• Develop methods and carry out means of communicating about geological collections and research to the Museum’s diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not traditionally represented in museums.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position leads to a maximum salary of $114,444 based on annual performance advances.
