Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1: Full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades - 6 - tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and math.
Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 2: Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1; completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training; 144 hours of electrician trade specific instruction; and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in their coursework.
Possession and maintenance of a CDL Class B license issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles will be required. Candidates applying without a CDL B license are required to obtain a CDL permit within 30 days of appointment and obtain the license by the end of the probationary period. Failure to do so will result in termination.
Pursuant to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act, pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required. Once appointed to/selected for the position, random drug and alcohol testing will be required.

Duties Description Under general supervision, performs skilled work at journey-level in the maintenance, repair, and installation of building, highway, and bridge electrical systems and equipment; installs, maintains, and repairs electrical power, lighting, signal systems, and electrical equipment; repairs and tests switchboards and switchboard devices; installs traffic signals repairs and maintains signal controls; lights pumping equipment, neon signs, oil burners, and other mechanisms; maintains complete highway and bridge lighting; may be required to supervise. Also responsible for an extensive preventative maintenance program to ensure equipment is in proper working order.

Sick Leave Incentive Plan – Employees who have not accumulated 165 sick days and have not used sick leave during the periods of January 1st to June 30th or July 1st to December 31st, each year, may receive two days of pay for each six-month period. Employees who have a sick leave balance of 165 days, and continuously maintain that balance for each six-month period, may receive four days of pay for each six-month period.
Employees with 20+ years of continuous Authority/State service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.
Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.
New York's 529 College Savings Program, which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.
Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Service Award Payments - Upon completion of 10 years of Authority service, eligible employees will receive a 10-year Service Award Payment. Payments are then awarded every five years as noted in the contract until 30 years of Authority service is reached. Service Awards have a positive impact on retirement.
Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.
Some positions will be eligible for downstate and/or geographical pay depending on location and title.
