Job Specifics

Duties Description The Offices of the Inspector General (“OIG”) are comprised of three offices, derived from the three appointments held by Inspector General Lucy Lang:
• The Office of the New York State Inspector General (“NYSIG”), as established by Executive Law Article 4-A, is entrusted with the responsibility of receiving and investigating complaints of fraud, corruption, criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and abuse in executive branch agencies of New York State government. Since June 2021, this includes complaints related to the New York State Gaming Commission.

• The Office of the New York State Welfare Inspector General (“OWIG”), as established by section 74 of the Executive Law, is responsible for maintaining the integrity of New York State’s public assistance programs; and

• The Office of the New York State Workers’ Compensation Fraud Inspector General (“WCFIG”), as established by section 136 of the Workers’ Compensation Law, is responsible for investigating violations of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the workers’ compensation system.

OIG has office locations in Albany, Buffalo, Hauppauge, New York City, Suffern, and Syracuse.

Job Description
OIG is seeking candidates to serve as an Investigative Auditor to work on teams of OIG Investigative Counsels and Investigators to evaluate allegations of fraud, abuse, corruption, conflicts of interest, and other criminal activity involving New York State agencies, their employees, and those doing business with the State. These allegations frequently involve state contracts, procurements, abuses of public benefits, and white-collar offenses.

An OIG Investigative Auditor:
• Conducts complex financial investigations, forensic audits, and systemic reviews concerning allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse, utilizing advanced investigative techniques, data analytics, and forensic accounting methods;

• Analyzes financial records, transactional data, and other relevant information to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies indicative of fraudulent activity;

• Collaborates with OIG attorneys and investigators to prepare detailed reports documenting findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective action;

• Partners with other federal, state, and local law enforcement and regulatory agencies, including presenting potential matters for prosecution and testifying at various stages of the criminal process.


Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
• Candidates must have a degree in accounting, finance, or forensic examination, and a minimum of three (3) years of full-time accounting or auditing experience, preferably within an investigative context. Those with experience conducting investigations into white-collar criminal offenses, government contracting, procurement processes, or insurance, health care, or other complex frauds are particularly encouraged to apply.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including an ability to synthesize large volumes of information and explain complex subject matters in a fashion appropriate for public consumption.

• Proficiency with Excel, and an ability to utilize other data analytics and auditing software.

• The ideal candidate possesses strong judgment, maintains strict adherence to confidentiality, has a collegial attitude, is a self-starter with the capacity to work independently. The ideal candidate is also a highly adept multitasker who displays both a sense of urgency and an ability to meet deadlines.

• A work-related familiarity with New York State government, its agencies, and laws is preferred but not required.

• New York State residency and a valid driver’s license.
