Duties Description The New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education seek to fill the position of Assistant Commissioner for Archives and Records of the New York State Archives. The State Archives, in addition to operating a program to preserve and make available the permanently valuable records of New York State, offers a comprehensive and innovative array of records related programs and services to state agencies, local governments, community organizations, and individuals. These programs and services span the boundaries of New York State and include technical assistance, training, publications, and grants to address archives and records management issues and to promote the use of historical records in the classroom as a means to help students develop analytical and creative thinking skills. The State Archives operates a stewardship facility where more than 220 million colonial and state government records are preserved and made available for use. Through the Documentary Heritage Program, the Archives support programs to ensure that the history of all New Yorkers is collected and preserved for future generations.

The Assistant Commissioner manages approximately 70 employees, along with a yearly budget of approximately $6.5 million in addition to grant programs totaling approximately $6 million each year.
