Job Specifics

Duties Description Harriman Group Camps located at Harriman State Park is home to 32 camps run by 23 different organizations. It’s hosted thousands of people since its inception in 1913, allowing them to enjoy summer camp adventures. Before coming to Group Camps, many campers had never left the New York City metropolitan area and were unable to experience the wonder and excitement of nature firsthand. Harriman Group Camps offers a welcome opportunity to escape the stresses of everyday life and to engage in fun, healthy, and educational pursuits such as boating, fishing, hiking, arts and crafts, nature programs, sports, archery, and more.

Harriman Group Camps consist of over 900 cabins varying in size from small sleeping cabins to large recreation and mess halls. Each camp has its own beach and swim area. The camps department has a team of 18 staff who perform a variety of tasks such as machine operation, dock work, carpentry, minor electrical duties, plumbing, roofing, snow plowing, tree cutting, and cabin renovations. Staff work together with the directors of each organization to ensure issues are addressed quickly, and that each camp is safe and secure.

Under the direction of the Park Manager 3, SG-23 or higher-level designee, the Trades Generalist at Harriman Group Camps will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks. The incumbent will be responsible for a primary trade in one of the following: plumbing, carpentry, motor equipment, small engine repair, heavy equipment operation or mechanics. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Apply skills and knowledge in carpentry to make structural building repairs, replace and repair roofs, replace siding and shingles, build steps and landings, repair or replace doors and windows, and frame partitions.
• Lay out work and diagnose problems; read and interpret plans, diagrams, and specifications.
• Assist lake foreman and other camp department personnel perform a variety of other maintenance, repair, and installation tasks, including duties in the carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry trades.
• Perform medium to heavy manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
• Operate tandem and CDL trucks, hauling work materials such as wood chips, millings, fill, soil, and sand to camps throughout Harriman State Park.
• Perform snow removal, tree removal including felling and cutting trees, and storm clean up using various equipment and machinery.
• Supervise and assign work to lower-level staff as needed.
• This position involves working outdoors in all weather conditions, including difficult site terrains and remote areas of the park.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess a valid Class B* Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.***
• Must possess a valid Class A* Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.***
• Must complete chainsaw 101 and Game of Logging training within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Experience operating machinery and equipment including but not limited to backhoes, skid steers, front end loaders, and excavators.
• Knowledge of greasing, lubricating, and daily maintenance of equipment.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other building crafts.
• Must be knowledgeable in the use of personal protective equipment and capable of following appropriate safety standards.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, and/or evening shifts.

***Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.

Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($48,956) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($59,757) and the Downstate Adjustment ($3,400).
