Job Specifics
Duties Description Duties are expected to include, but are not limited to, patrolling an assigned area to deter criminal activity and witness and detect dangerous situation, responding to calls for assistance, regulating pedestrian and vehicular traffic, enforcing vehicle and traffic laws, preparing a variety of shift summary reports, logs and records, and delivering a variety of in-service training and/or community educational programs. This position is a part of the the Enrollment and Student Success division which supports a student’s entire collegiate experience from the point of admission through to graduation. We partner with students, faculty and staff to provide a network of opportunities and services that lead to student success. Collectively, the division of Enrollment and Student Success positively influences the health, safety and well-being of the student body. Minimum Qualifications Must be eligible for permanent appointment to this title pursuant to civil service law
Promotion:
One year of permanent service as a University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1 or 2 AND:
Either 1. 60 or more college semester credit hours;
Or 2. 30 college semester credit hours AND two years of active United States military service with an honorable discharge or under conditions in the New York State Restoration of Honor Act;
Or 3. 30 college semester credit hours AND successful completion of a New York State Municipal Police Training Council approved Pre-Employment Training Program AND eligibility to complete the second phase of such training program that has not lapsed.
Or 4. two years of experience as a police officer in New York State with Municipal Police Training Course certification (or equivalent course approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council). A certified Peace Officer Training course does not meet this requirement.
Open Competitive:

Additional Comments As a part of the University Police Department (UPD), University Police Officers enforce all New York State and local laws and the Student Code of Conduct on the grounds of the State University of New York. University Police Officers are charged with full police officer powers under Criminal Procedure Law, Section 1.20(34)(s) and are responsible for the performance of the full range of professional police duties. University Police Officers assist other local, state and federal police officers with investigations and may collect evidence, question witnesses or testify in court in connection with alleged criminal actions. University Police Officers are actively involved with the campus community and activities including educating community members on such topics as personal safety, risk awareness, crime prevention, alcohol awareness, sexual assault prevention and other community safety issues.
