Job Specifics
Duties Description The Assistant Regional Director, under the direction of the Regional Director, assists in the management of the responsibilities of the regional office including all programs, facilities, resources and personnel that report through the Regional Office structure.
The Assistant Regional Director is responsible for:
•Assisting in supervising staff (direct reports and/or other regional staff) to ensure staff are productive; meet work expectations and deadlines; and adhere to all rules, policies, and procedures, including but not limited to all Commissioner and Administrative Policies;
•Managing aspects of personnel functions for the Region;
•Preparing annual evaluations for direct reports;
•Ensuring staff complete all mandatory training and ensuring that staff are cross trained to the extent possible to provide backup in the absence of others;
•Ensuring appropriate use of fiscal resources;
•Ensuring that the Region is prepared to respond to emergencies;
•Maintaining expectations that all staff relationships within the agency, region and with outside parties are cordial, professional, and respectful;
•Ensuring staff are aware of and adhere to all health and safety requirements; and
•Participating in Department-wide strategic planning exercises, including succession planning and workload prioritization and incorporating those initiatives into the work of the Region.
In the absence of or by the direction of the Regional Director, the Assistant Regional Director performs the executive functions required for the effective management and administration of the Region’s programs and responsibilities including, responding to emergencies; providing support and assistance as necessary to the Governor’s office, other state agencies, local municipalities and relevant organizations within the region; and assisting in any special projects or initiatives that the agency undertakes to forward its mission.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience in a field related to environmental conservation, environmental protection, natural resources, or government administrative experience serving the public, directing government organizations, or government programs, this includes responsibility for organizing and directing a major program or group of programs. Three years of the experience must have been managerial and included responsibility for implementation of program goals and objectives within the established budgets; supervision or coordination of staff to achieve specific program objectives. A relevant master’s degree may substitute for one year of the specialized experience and a relevant doctoral decree may substitute for two years of the specialized experience.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
