Job Specifics

Duties Description Perform journey level painting work and frequently supervise others in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint. Covering trim, floors, furniture and other surfaces with masking tape, drop cloths and other protective coverings to keep them free of paint; reviewing and implementing work orders and assignments; removing and reinstalling fixtures (e.g., doorknobs, electric switch covers) as necessary; following safeguards, rules and regulations; preparing surfaces to be painted by washing them; filling holes and cracks with putty and sanding them until they’re smooth; Apply primer and other sealers to paint surfaces to ensure that paint sticks to them; mixing and matching paint; stain and other finishes to job specifications; applying paint, stain and other finishes to paint surfaces using paintbrushes, rollers or sprayers; maintaining an inventory of supplies like paintbrushes, rollers and tarps; removing old finish using scrapers and chemical compounds; estimating time and material costs on painting projects; and cleaning machines, equipment and work areas using water, solvents and other cleaning aids. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in painting under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training,apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and
training gained by completion of technical courses in painting at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Preferred Qualifications: Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, ability to read and interpret technical manuals and blueprints. Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally throughout the workday. Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach overhead or at ground level to prepare and paint surfaces.

Additional Comments One, permanent, non-competitive full-time appointment.

The posted salary range ($54,425 - $65,548) includes $4,000 of downstate adjustment.
