Job Specifics
Duties Description The New York State Department of Labor is seeking customer service-oriented and enthusiastic student interns to join our Career Center teams statewide. Interns will play a vital role in welcoming customers, assisting with intake, and directing walk-in and phone traffic to the appropriate services. In addition, interns will work in the Career Center resource room, providing one-on-one support to customers and assisting them with access to critical services.
This internship offers students the chance to dive into a high-impact, high-traffic environment, gain hands-on experience in workforce development, and help improve the user experience for thousands of job seekers across New York State.
What You'll Do:
* Customer Engagement: Welcome visitors, assist with check-ins, and guide individuals to the appropriate staff or department based on their needs.
* Front-Line Support: Answer phones, help route inquiries, and provide timely responses to common customer requests.
* Resource Room Assistance: Support customers with resumes, job applications, and navigation of workforce tools (e.g., VCC, InterviewStream, Coursera, NorthStar).
* Digital Literacy Coaching: Provide basic computer and technology assistance, including email setup, online applications, and job search platforms.
* Workshop & Event Support: Assist with scheduling, sign-ups, marketing, and facilitation of in-person and virtual workshops, job fairs, and recruitments.
* Project Work: Contribute to initiatives such as developing SharePoint/Microsoft Forms for workshop tracking, creating QR codes that link to important documents, and designing customer satisfaction tools.
* Labor Market Research: Compile and present briefs on local in-demand jobs, industries, and wage trends.
* Observation & Learning: Shadow Labor Services Representatives (LSRs) and Employment Counselors (ECs), observe mock interviews, and assist with workshops to build communication and presentation skills.
* Accessibility & Inclusion: Provide patient, clear assistance to customers with disabilities or limited English proficiency, ensuring equal access to services.
* Administrative Support: Help with scheduling, maintaining supplies, and preparing reports on customer service outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a student currently enrolled in upcoming/current college courses.
Preferred Skill sets:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to engage with diverse groups of people in a professional manner.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and work independently when needed.
• Comfort using Microsoft Office tools; familiarity with digital platforms or learning management systems is a plus.
• Interest in public service, workforce development, communications, or related fields.
Preferred Fields of Study:
• Communications, Business, Human Services, or Social Sciences
• Information Technology or related fields
