Job Specifics

Duties Description Come build your future with the State of New York!
Under the supervision of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor, SG-18, the incumbent will be assigned to Regional Maintenance and will perform journey-level work in carpentry. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Perform routine, journey-level carpentry tasks, including framing, finish work, drywall installation, roofing, masonry, window and door installation, and additional construction activities.
• Supervise, train, and monitor the daily carpentry activities of permanent and seasonal staff, ensuring tasks are completed according to safety policies, building codes, and procedures.
• Plan and lay out work, including preparing materials lists, placing orders, and ensuring compliance with New York State purchasing guidelines.
• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Measure and cut materials.
• Craft and assemble wooden structures, furniture, and fixtures.
• Utilize and perform routine preventative maintenance on hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
• Operate park machinery, including but not limited to: planers, band saws, sanders, vertical routers, and moulders.
• Inspect, clean, prep, stain, stack, and transport new and old lumber.
• Build and install furniture, cabinets, signs, and frames.
• Mass produce items such as tables, benches, bench slats, etc.
• Lay out, assemble, and inspect scaffolding.
• Follow building codes and regulations.
• Maintain material trackers, daily activity reports, facility and equipment inspection reports, and other required records.
• Assist in emergency response functions as assigned.

Although the work is periodically inspected by the supervisor, the incumbent is expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a journey level craftsperson.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in carpentry under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments Must be available to work a variable schedule that may include weekends, holidays and/or evening shifts.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Must be able to supervise and train others.
Must complete First Aid CPR/AED training within the probationary period and must maintain the certification as a term and condition of employment.
Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
