Duties Description Position Summary
A University Police Officer 2 supervises the activities of subordinates in the department as assigned by the chief. They may supervise one or more subordinate department employees, including University Police Officers, Communications Officers, Campus Public Safety Officers, Security Assistants, Student Assistants, and support staff as assigned. A University Police Officer 2 is specifically responsible for enforcing rules and regulations, including adherence to policies and conduct.
Major Responsibilities
Supervisory and personnel management
Staff scheduling and assignment:
Creates and maintains schedule rosters for uniformed and civilian staff.
Assigns University Police Officers, Campus Public Safety Officers, and Security Services Assistants to mobile and foot patrol and dispatch/desk assignments.
Alters schedules to provide sufficient coverage for anticipated periods of high demand.
Performance management:
Personally recognizes good and superior performance.
Offers constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.
Investigates minor infractions by officers, determines the facts, and recommends corrective or disciplinary action to a supervisor.
Oversight and guidance:
Listens to subordinates’ questions and problems and provides solutions.
Counsels department members when necessary, in accordance with prescribed guidelines.
Ensures department policy and procedures are followed by all personnel.
Meets with subordinates to review criminal and non-criminal report preparation.
Training and development
Instruction and briefing:
Instructs officers for shift assignments, ensuring they are informed of current trends, security concerns, and new policies.
Conducts training for officers during shift briefings and as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Equipment compliance:
Inspects personnel and their equipment to ensure compliance with University Police regulations.
Directs subordinates to make necessary corrections if needed.
Administrative and reporting
Document review and approval:
Prepares a formal, written account of shift activities and maintains a log.
Reviews and approves other written documents, including bi-weekly time records.
Decision-making:
Makes decisions based on knowledge of police procedures, applicable laws (state, county, and municipal), university policy, and current labor contracts.
Records and approvals:
Receives, reviews, and approves or denies requests for leave.
Field operations
Patrol:
Patrols the campus and inspects and signs notebooks.
Incident response:
Responds to incidents as necessary.
General duties:
Performs all the duties of a University Police Officer 1.
Minimum Qualifications You must take and pass a Civil Service examination in order to be considered for this position. If you are on the NYS Civil Service eligible list for this title, you will be canvassed via email.
Candidates must meet established physical and medical requirements for appointment to the position, must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted NYS motor vehicle license, and must be legally eligible to carry a firearm and complete all requirements for certification as a police officer in NYS.
