Duties Description Position Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Private Equity, this position is responsible for helping to oversee the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System’s private equity department which includes private equity and private debt. Key areas of responsibility include strategy, team building and mentoring, investment due diligence, performance monitoring and reporting, compliance, and associated operations.
Job Duties
The duties of the Deputy Managing Director-Private Debt include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist the Managing Director of Private Equity with oversight of the Private Equity and Private Debt portfolios
Assist the Managing Director of Private Equity with creating and executing on a long-term strategic plan as it relates to investments, staffing and professional development
In the absence of the Managing Director of Private Equity, represent Private Equity at Executive staff, committee, and Board related meetings
Oversee and participate in various administrative activities including annual budget process, and investment policy manual review
Participation on internal committees
Periodic travel required
Active involvement in the Private Markets community to stay current with industry trends and establish and maintain professional networks
Develop and implement strategic and tactical asset allocation of the private equity and private debt portfolios in conjunction with the System’s non-discretionary consultants
Develop and implement a rigorous evaluation process to ensure selection of managers for the System’s portfolio including all stages of investment due diligence process and legal document negotiations on business issues in conjunction with NYSTRS’ legal department and external fund counsel
Monitor existing investments and assist in managing relationships with the System’s non-discretionary consultants, General Partners of the System’s private equity and private debt investments and other Limited Partners (“LPs”)
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and twelve (12) years of institutional investment experience with an investment management organization, pension consulting firm or plan sponsor, including:
Ten (10) years of leadership experience including managing and developing staff, and experience interacting at Executive/Board level; AND
Ten (10) years of Private Equity and/or Private Debt investment management experience including conducting research, sourcing opportunities, conducting and managing the due diligence process, and making recommendations to an Investment Committee and/or Board; AND
CFA and/or CAIA Charterholder
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in business administration, finance, accounting or a closely related field
15 years of underwriting experience in private equity and or private debt
15 years of supervising and mentoring staff
Strong professional network including both general partners and limited partners
Experience serving on Limited Partner Advisory Committees
Experience underwriting co-investments and secondary transactions
Ability to make and support business and investment decisions while taking into consideration other viewpoints and enterprise-wide needs
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Attention to detail
Ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently but also as a team player
Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
Strong analytical skills
Working knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Additional Comments Currently we have a hybrid work schedule which may be subject to change in the future
Travel is required of this position; possibly up to 40% of the time
