Job Specifics
Duties Description State Data Center Internship Position: This position involves working as a part of a team that uses Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics datasets to analyze and report on demographics, income, and labor force topics for New York State. This position would entail assisting with a special project such as developing a methodology and framework to link household records over time using Current Population Survey microdata, writing SAS code to create new reports or re-coding existing reports to rely on the Census Bureau Application Programming Interface (API), assisting with developing a migration study of movers coming into and leaving New York State using American Community Survey data, or assisting with GIS tasks such as developing an interactive mapping tool. This internship provides hands-on experience in data analysis, statistical programming, or geographic information systems, with the expectation of contributing to meaningful research and reports.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Be a United States citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
Be 18 years of age or older
Be actively enrolled in a New York State college, university, or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State, attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State*
Have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year's worth of academic credits over a longer period may qualify part-time students for participation in the program), or be a currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
Have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, or the letter grade equivalent
Preferred Skill sets:
Key learning objectives include developing analytical skills, gaining proficiency in data manipulation techniques, and acquiring practical experience applying statistical methods to inform real-world policy decisions.
Skills desired for this position are strong attention to detail and analytic aptitude, as well as excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills. Additional preferred skills include data management, SAS/SQL programming, and ArcGIS or other GIS software familiarity.
