Job Specifics
Duties Description Primary responsibilities include planning, implementing, and reviewing region-wide technical projects and programs including supervision of work crews consisting of hourly and permanent technical staff, volunteers, and interns stationed at the Brownville office in support of multiple Bureau of Fisheries and Wildlife program areas.
Specific activities include but are not limited to species surveys (netting assessments, electrofishing, breeding waterfowl and grassland birds, mobile acoustic bat routes, etc.); species management (double-crested cormorant management, nuisance wildlife abatement and response, coordinating fish stocking, brook trout pond management activities including reclamation, habitat enhancement projects, collection of biological data from hunter harvested deer/bear, etc.); land management (preparation of annual work plans for WMAs, FASs, BLSs and PFRs; boundary marking and sign posting; addressing trespass and encroachment issues; assisting with land acquisition; etc.); manage regional databases; equipment upkeep, inventory, and acquisition; and public education and outreach via phone, e-mail, walk-in contacts as well as formal outreach events and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications for provisional appointment:
Must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and have had One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2.
Minimum qualifications for competitive appointment:
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis
or
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at salary grade 13 or higher and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2.
*If there is no viable eligible for this title and no more than three individuals interested from among the interested qualified candidates for this position, it may be possible to make a permanent appointment via non-competitive promotion.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Must have certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercrafts at time of appointment.
