Hours: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (Monday-Friday)
Undergraduate pay rate: $19.04/hour
Graduate pay rate: $21.57/hour

The SUNY Climate Corps “Reforestation Internship” leverages expertise and resources to build capacity for native plant materials production, workforce development, and reforestation and restoration in New York State Parks. Project work will bolster the ‘25 Million Trees by 2033’ initiative launched by Governor Kathy Hochul during her 2024 State of the State Address.

Reforestation Interns will develop skills implementing forest habitat restoration and reforestation projects. This may include performing reforestation site assessments, invasive species management, surveys and monitoring, native plant propagation, and outplanting.

The Reforestation Intern is a joint position between State Parks and SUNY Morrisville. The intern will report to Lorenzo State Historic Site 3-4 days per week to implement forest habitat restoration work in State Parks (75%). The intern will report to SUNY Morrisville 1-2 days per week to propagate native plants for forest habitat restoration (25%). The position will primarily be field based but will also include greenhouse production and office work.

Job duties:
• Native and invasive plant identification
• Reforestation site assessments
• Invasive plant and forest pest surveys and reporting
• Invasive species removal
• Native species planting
• Data collection and entry
• Native plant propagation
• Communicating project work to coworkers, volunteers, and patrons.

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications
There are no minimum qualifications for this title per Civil Service.

Additional Comments This internship is only open to currently enrolled SUNY students.

Operational Needs:
• Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree at a SUNY institution in environmental science, conservation, natural resource management, forestry, horticulture, or a related field.
• Experience with environmental field work including plant identification, invasive species management, planting, and/or propagation.
• Experience with ArcGIS and associated mobile field applications preferred but not required.
• Candidate must be self-motivated, able to initiate projects and tasks, have good time management and organizational skills, and effectively work with others.
• Candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
