Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the general supervision of a Supervising Safety and Health Inspector or an Associate Industrial Hygienist, the incumbent will:

• Investigate allegations by employees of hazardous conditions
• Conduct inspections of explosives dealers and explosives storage facilities covered by the Public Assembly Law
• Enforce uniform mold assessment and remediation standards
• Identify areas of vulnerability and/or violations of standards
• Perform sampling using a variety of measuring instruments
• Assist in the abatement of a particular hazard in cases where a citation has previously been issued
• May supervise Safety and Health Inspectors and assist with training
• Survey public and private worksites to determine compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
• Conduct public relations outreach to employers to promote agency safety and health consultation services
• Visit places of business to inform them of available services
• Research businesses involved with hazardous operations or materials and Safety and Health measures pertaining to occupational safety, management systems and processes
• Conduct safety training for employees and employers
• Prepare a written report on inspection and the findings
• Recommend improvements to the employer’s safety and health program and track inspection cases to ensure hazards are corrected appropriately and timely.

Minimum Qualifications As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Senior Safety & Health Inspector; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Senior Safety & Health Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent as a Grade 16 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Additional Comments This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.

A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
