Job Specifics
Duties Description The Psychology Department at the State University of New York at Old Westbury seeks a candidate for a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor anticipated to begin Spring or Fall 2027. We are seeking candidates with a concentration in social psychology or a closely related field. Candidates who integrate traditional with critical perspectives in examining social issues, particularly those related to the impacts of resource disparities, are especially encouraged to apply. The specific area of expertise within social psychology is open, although candidates with expertise in specialty areas such as: peace and violence, community psychology, organizational psychology, group dynamics, environmental sustainability, prejudice, and intersectionality are highly valued. Candidates will be expected to teach core curriculum courses including Introduction to Psychology, courses in the research sequence, as well as senior seminar courses. Candidates will also be expected to teach the following courses: Social Psychology, Community Psychology, Psychology and Social Justice, along with other elective courses in the "Social Psychology" and "Diversity and Social Justice" domains. Specific course assignments will be determined based on departmental need. In addition to teaching duties, the candidate will be expected to participate in service activities including, but not limited to: advising students on course registration and careers; department, university, and other related committee responsibilities; program assessment; and curriculum development. Progression through the tenure track will be based on demonstrated excellence in teaching, meaningful service to the department, university and community, and sustained professional development, including scholarly contributions to the field.
The Psychology Department is the largest major at the college, offering a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Psychology and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Mental Health Counseling, and is committed to faculty diversity and to the historic mission of the University to advance social justice, civic engagement, and sustainability.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates applying for this position must have completed all the requirements for and earned their Ph.D. in Psychology or a closely related field by January 2027, or before the position start date.
The area of specialization must be in social psychology or a closely related field.
Ability to teach courses in the specialization area and core courses for the undergraduate curriculum.
A strong commitment to their own active research program.
A strong commitment to teaching/mentoring diverse student populations at the undergraduate level.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience teaching in an institution of higher education to a student body that is diverse in terms of racial, ethnic, multicultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
