Duties Description The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is hiring a
Conservation Security Worker for the Peekamoose Valley Riparian Corridor within the Sundown Wild Forest Preserve, commonly known as the Peekamoose Blue Hole. A Conservation Security Worker in New York State protects DEC facilities by patrolling on foot or in vehicles, enforcing site rules, and providing information to visitors. They secure, manage, and monitor natural resources and recreational areas.
• Ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and property.
• Required to be available to greet visitors, provide the public with information, and answer questions about the facility and surroundings. Must be able to communicate well with others, i.e., visitors, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Patrol assigned areas, informing visitors about facility rules and regulations. Required to enforce permitting, parking, and facility regulations, using common sense, restraint, and authority.
• Encourage appropriate behavior and proper use of facilities; when necessary, contact law enforcement for assistance to control or stop illegal, destructive, or unsafe activities.
• Assist law enforcement at the scenes of emergencies and other incidents. Assist with search-and-rescue efforts if needed.
• Keep supervisors informed of activities in the facility. Prepare required reports and maintain records of daily activities, public use, maintenance needs, and regulation enforcement.
• All tasks are to be conducted safely, with any incidents, injuries, or illnesses reported immediately to the supervisor.
• The CSW must always wear the appropriate issued uniform and maintain the uniform in a clean, neat condition. The use of work-type specific shoes is required.
Minimum Qualifications Must possess and maintain a motor vehicle operator’s license and have completed either;
(A) a one year course at a ranger school, or similar learning institution, in a park or natural resource management, law enforcement or similar curriculum; OR
(B) have one season of recreation facility experience involving contact with the public or in the enforcement of laws, rules and regulations; OR
(C) One year of working or interacting with the public in a recreational facility; OR
(D) One year of environmental experience in a remote wilderness setting; OR
(E) have six months work experience in law enforcement, security services
employment, military service or similar experience actively involved with public contact or in the enforcement of laws, policies, and rules and regulations; OR
(F) have completed at least 15 college credit hours in criminal justice or similar course work.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 10/31/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
