Job Specifics
Duties Description Supervises a work crew in the performance of a variety of construction and maintenance tasks.
• Interprets the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) in order to setup appropriate work zones and safety measures.
• Works with Equipment Operator Instructors to provide on-the-job training, evaluation, and certification for the striping machine and related driver endorsements.
• Completes and submits forms to document on-the-job training.
• Schedules work projects and makes individual work assignments to crew members
• Orally instructs crew members in the activities and tasks to be performed and answers their questions concerning work procedures.
Minimum Qualifications Possession of New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Category 2 and 3 DOT Striper certifications
AND
Either one year of pavement marking experience and one year of permanent service in a title in DOT’s Highway Maintenance Division allocated at Grade 8 or above; OR one year of experience as a lead worker or supervisor in a Highway Maintenance position allocated at Grade 10 or above.
Operating need at the posted work location requires individuals responding to this posting be certified on the (E88) Striping Machine, Rear Guns and (E89) Striping Truck within one year of appointment to the position. However, if the general nature of this posting requirement is of sufficient urgency to the operating need of the Residency the candidate will be expected to obtain certification as quickly as possible within the established training and evaluation procedures. Failure to obtain and hold certification on the specified equipment will result in removal of the candidate from the position.
• Observes work in progress and inspects completed work to ensure adherence to instructions, guidelines and schedules.
• Maintains records of work performed, materials, and labor as part of a manual or automated maintenance management system.
• Has contact with the general public both in person and via telephone regarding pavement marking projects and associated roadwork as well as snow and ice removal activities.
• Provides crew training in the operation of all pavement marking equipment.
May work with contractors in planning and scheduling pavement marking work, including lane closures and the inspection of work in progress and completed work.
Performs all tasks related to a highway maintenance pavement marking program.
May operate self-propelled machinery such as cars, trucks, construction equipment and riding mowers; non-self-propelled machines such as highway paint stripers, compressors, generators, and bituminous heaters, and may use hand and power tools such as axes, shovels, chain saws, and power mowers.
Responsible for the overhaul and maintenance of all pavement marking equipment.
May perform or supervise the performance of the full range of snow and ice removal activities at a location or shift:
• Operates heavy dump trucks with front plow, wing low(s), and aggregate spreader to plow snow and control ice simultaneously.
• Operates snowplows with wing without assistance in One Person Plowing (OPP).
• Operates front-end loaders to load ice control sand and salt mixes, gravel, or other materials onto trucks.
• Maintains accurate records of materials used.
• Performs physical labor tasks as required.
• Performs radio dispatch tasks.
• Performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and assists mechanics in equipment maintenance and repair.
• Mounts, adjusts, and dismounts snowplows, wing plows, and aggregate hoppers and spreaders.
• Changes tires and tire chains as needed.
• Changes oil and spark plugs.
• Changes oil, fuel, air, and hydraulic filters.
• Washes or steam cleans trucks and other equipment.
• Assists and trains other employees and workers.
As a working supervisor, may perform all tasks and activities outlined in the Classification Standard for Highway Maintenance Worker 1.
As a member of this crew, you will work throughout Region 7 re-establishing pavement markings, grinding pavement markings, completing Traffic work requests, using Pavement Marking Equipment and tools, perform daily pre/post op of Dept equipment, assist with repairs of paint striping equipment to include preventative maintenance and winter overhaul. There may be some overtime associated with Pavement Marking tasks (summer months). You will be assigned to a residency for winter snow and ice activity based on the regional bidding seniority/process (winter months). The successful candidate will become a member of the Regional Pavement Marking crew and be subject to the seniority rules associated with an assignment to Regional crew.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments The starting salary for this position is $56,695. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $47,695 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9000, specific to this title and location.
