Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of the Safety and Health Program Manager, the incumbent will:
• Supervise staff of Safety and Health Inspectors and Industrial Hygienists engaged in the conduct of safety and health inspections of public sector facilities including state, county, city and town office buildings.
• Ensure conformance with New York State occupational safety and health standards.
• Plan and schedule the work.
• Monitor employee performance and program operations.
• Train subordinates.
• Review staff reports
• Review inspector’s daily work summaries
• Provide and conduct outreach to promote program and training to public and private sectors
• Conduct training activities for subordinates
• Supervise licensing, certification, and installation activities of individuals and various kinds of businesses to ensure safety and health of employees and the public
• Recommend revisions to laws, rules and regulations
• Oversee the maintenance of files on all inspected industries
• Prepare for hearings
• Process penalty assessments.
• Employees will be required to travel, multiple days/nights, for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time.

Minimum Qualifications As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Supervising Safety & Health Inspector position. If you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Supervising Safety & Health Inspector eligible list for this location, if one exists.

52.7 Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP) Qualifications:
DOL Employees Only
To be eligible for NCP, candidates must be in the Department of Labor promotion field and have one year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as an Associate Safety & Health Inspector OR two years as a Senior Safety & Health Inspector.
If 3 or fewer qualified Department of Labor Associate Safety & Health Inspectors or Senior Safety & Health Inspectors respond as interested, Civil Service may approve the permanent appointment of one of the qualified Associate Safety & Health Inspectors or Senior Safety & Health Inspectors without further examination.
Note: Non-competitive refers to not competing in an examination; the appointment will be competitive.

Provisional Qualifications:
DOL Employees only
Candidate must have one year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as an Associate Safety & Health Inspector OR two years as a Senior Safety & Health Inspector.
The appointed candidate would have to take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the examination to be appointed permanently.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Additional Comments This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.

Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment, and you will be responsible for the payment for the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to the positions that require this examination may also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
