Duties Description Are you a driven professional passionate about safeguarding communities from radiation risks? Join our team as a Public Health Specialist (Radiological Health) and play a critical role in protecting the public. In this dynamic, multidisciplinary role, you'll apply radiation protection standards across diverse settings, from hospitals and medical offices to educational institutions and commercial facilities.
You'll be at the forefront of emergency preparedness, collaborating with state agencies and local communities to respond to radiologic events and assess potential health hazards at contaminated sites. This position offers opportunities for professional growth, with extensive in-house training and formal coursework at federal training centers nationwide.

Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS Minimum Qualifications:
Public Health Specialist Trainee 1 (Radiological Health), (NS - Grade 14): A qualifying bachelor's degree*
Public Health Specialist Trainee 2 (Radiological Health), (NS - Grade 16): A qualifying bachelor's degree* AND one year of experience applying specialized knowledge in radiation protection.
Public Health Specialist 1 (Radiological Health), Grade 18: A qualifying bachelor's degree* AND two years of experience applying specialized knowledge in radiation protection.
A master's degree in a related field can substitute for one year of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for two years of experience.

Reassignment or Transfer: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Public Health Specialist 1 (Radiological Health), Grade 18, or Public Health Specialist Trainee (Radiological Health); OR current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent permanent, competitive service in a title eligible to transfer, via 70.1 or 70.4 to a Public Health Specialist 1 (Radiological Health), Grade 18, or Public Health Specialist Trainee (Radiological Health), NS
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will be detail-oriented, technologically proficient, and be competent in mathematics. They will also have strong written, and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills; be able to work independently on tasks; and demonstrate strong critical thinking skills. The preferred candidate will possess a bachelor's or higher degree in a physical or natural science and will have at least one-year full-time experience in radiation protection.
Additional Comments Travel throughout several counties to areas not served by public transportation is required (80%).

This position is part of the NYS HELPS program. No examination is required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
