Job Specifics

Duties Description Activities related to regional coldwater and warmwater fisheries management, Oneida Lake cormorant management and angler education and outreach efforts. Assist with regional fisheries management surveys including: 1) stream electrofishing, 2) boat electrofishing, 3) gill net fish sampling in lakes and ponds, 4) trap net sampling in lakes and ponds, 5) fish and aquatic macro-invertebrate identification, 6) invasive aquatic species eradication efforts (hand removal of water chestnuts), 7) operation and maintenance of fish passage facility, 8) fish marking (using the automated tagging trailer), and 9) data entry. Assist with data collection during aforementioned activities including measuring, weighing and taking scales from fish (for age determination), and/or recording data on appropriate field data forms. The ability to carry or assist in carrying heavy equipment (generators, deep cycle batteries, nets, car-top boats, etc.) over rough, uneven terrain is required. This position will require supervising Fish and Wildlife Technician 1s and work crews consisting of seasonal and permanent staff, laborers, and volunteers. The successful candidate is expected to independently coordinate and performs various field activities for several project areas or counties within Region 7. Well-qualified candidates would also have a working knowledge of current GIS, GPS, Access, and Excel software.

Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.

Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described.

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 11/30/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Transportation needs of this position require use of a state vehicle and adhering to the Department’s Vehicle Policy. You must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for this position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of work schedule, will be discussed at interview.
