Duties Description The Department of Labor Communications Team is seeking a strategic and skilled Public Information Specialist 1 (Digital Content) to join our web team and shape the digital experience for the millions of visitors who rely on our website. This role is vital to ensuring our public-facing information is accurate, engaging, and accessible to all. In this collaborative position, you will partner with program experts and agency leadership to translate complex information into plain language, design intuitive content layouts, and champion digital best practices. This is a high-impact opportunity for a professional communicator passionate about public service, user experience, and clear communication to make a meaningful difference for our community.

Duties of the Public Information Specialist 1 (Digital Content) may include, but not be limited to, the following:

•Write, edit, and publish clear, engaging, and accurate web copy that adheres to the agency’s brand, tone, and style guidelines.
• Translate complex legislative, regulatory, or program-specific language into plain language that is easily understood by diverse public audiences.
• Ensure all web content is optimized for search engines (SEO) to help customers easily find the services and information they need.
• Partner with program managers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and agency leadership to identify communication goals and develop comprehensive content plans for various program areas.
• Lead discovery meetings with stakeholders to determine what information needs to be on the website, how it should be structured, and how success will be measured.
• Act as an advisory resource for internal teams, guiding them on digital communication best practices and managing expectations regarding web layout and design constraints.
• Ensure all digital content complies with federal and state accessibility standards (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 guidelines), including writing descriptive alt-text for images and structuring PDFs properly.

Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
Six (6) years of experience* in public relations, social media, and digital communications.

*Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications, or similar degree, substitutes for two (2), four (4), or five (5) years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience writing for a government agency, public utility, non-profit, or highly regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, finance) and translating complex regulations into public-facing content.
• Demonstrated comprehension of Plain Language guidelines (such as the Federal Plain Language Guidelines) and the ability to simplify dense legal, technical, or bureaucratic jargon.
• Strong working knowledge of web accessibility standards, specifically Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1/2.2 AA and Section 508 compliance, including experience writing descriptive alt-text and structuring accessible PDFs.
• Hands-on experience managing content within enterprise-level CMS platforms.
• Proven ability to build consensus, manage expectations, and diplomatically negotiate content decisions with diverse stakeholders, including program directors, legal counsel, and technical staff.
• Strong organizational skills with experience managing multiple content projects simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines.
• Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Additional Comments Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
