Job Specifics
Duties Description Duties of the Associate Economist (Labor Research) within the Office of Policy, Strategy, and Research may include, but not be limited to the following:
• Assist in the preparation of the monthly jobs and local area unemployment rates press releases, monthly Governor’s briefing on labor market developments in New York State, and regional labor market briefings.
• Prepare other monthly data products and reports, including Labor Market Highlights, the Economic Data Card, and the Index of Coincident Economic Indicators.
• Review labor market information data and products for accuracy. Ensure up-to-date data are maintained in a readily accessible location.
• Respond to requests for labor market information from inside and outside the Department using a variety of data sources.
• Prepare special statistics reports, value-added pieces, and other ad hoc assignments.
• Remain up to date on current changes to a variety of labor statistics and work as part of a team to develop new labor market information products and services for New York State and its 10 regions.
• Conduct labor market research for New York State and its 10 labor market regions. Prepare and submit reports, as requested, in consultation with supervisor and the Chief of BLMI.
• Serve as a liaison between BLMI and DAC teams for the BLMI dashboard development and maintenance.
• Supervise and mentor staff, assign tasks, set priorities, and manage workloads to ensure timely and high-quality project completion.

Minimum Qualifications Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in an Associate Economist (Labor Research), Grade 23; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Associate Economist (Labor Research) eligible list for this location, if one
exists.
70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
One year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Grade 21 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

Provisional Qualifications: (DOL Employees Only)
Candidates being considered for Provisional appointment must show they signed up for the Associate Economist (Labor Research) Civil Service Examination which is being held on Saturday, September 19th, 2026. In order to remain in the position, the candidate will have to have passed the exam and be reachable to be appointed permanently.
You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Labor and have 1 year of permanent competitive, non-competitive NY HELPS*, or 55-b/55-c service in
Either A. Senior Economist (Labor Research)
Or B. Senior Statistician
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
Additional Comments Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
