Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree and five years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s Degree and four years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and two years of such experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a doctorate degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, neuroscience, or other relevant areas. Other relevant experience would include an extensive knowledge of electroencephalography, brain computer interface techniques, multivariate analytic methods, substance use disorders and cognitive neuroscience.
Additionally, the ideal candidate should have the following:
• Extensive programming skills in one or more languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, R, Matlab).
• Substantial publication record.
• A track record of successful competition for research funding.
Duties Description The Research Scientist will work in the Center for Biomedical Imaging and Neuromodulation (C-BIN) at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI), a nationally recognized leader in the application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques to the understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Using a combination of electroencephalography and functional MRI, the Research Scientist 4 will study cognitive-affective interactions underlying deficits in reinforcement learning. A particular focus of this position will be the development of clinically-relevant biomarkers for these deficits in those with a history and/or predisposition towards substance use. Once established, it is expected that these biomarkers will be used to guide the development of a real-time EEG (or fMRI) based system for treatment intervention. The incumbent will be expected to design, conduct and analyze empirical studies of the reward system in developing and clinical populations. The incumbent will be responsible for the reporting of findings in the form of scientific presentations and publications and for the development of highly competitive proposals for research grants and contracts that further the mission of the NKI and OMH. Additional duties will include the supervision and training of junior staff.
