Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from a college/university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or equivalent; possession of a license to practice veterinary medicine in New York State; and proof of accreditation by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture; and three years of experience dealing with livestock diseases including horses, cattle, sheep, swine and poultry and wildlife.
Completion of six courses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Management Institute or accredited education institution in the following areas may substitute for up to one year of experience: Foreign Animal Diseases, Zoonotic Diseases, Bioterrorism Select Agents and Emergency Preparedness, Animals in Disasters, Livestock in Disasters, Principles of Emergency Management, Principles and Methods of Epidemiology or Statistical Inference.
*Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.
Duties Description This position will be primarily responsible for conducting investigations of disease outbreaks, collecting necessary specimens and reporting findings promptly; responding to reports of suspected foreign animal disease and reporting unusual incidence of disease to central office; inspecting livestock markets for sanitation, animal handling and quality of records and compliance with laws and regulations; enforcing regulations governing importation and sale of livestock; supervising and/or conducting tests on domestic animals for disease control and eradication programs and condemn animals reacting positively to the tests; overseeing Chronic Waste Disease program for captive cervidae in assigned territory; inspecting animals at state and county fairs for health and proper prerequisite tests and supervise assigned AHT’s disease control programs; administering the New York State Cattle Health Assurance Program (NYSCHAP) in assigned territory; participate in animal emergency planning efforts in assigned territory; conducting FDA contract residue prevention education for both producers and veterinarians.
Additional Comments This is a Field Work position. The official work station for this position will be from the employee's home.
