Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a minimum of one year of experience in environmental education programs; or one year of college study with specialization in natural sciences, natural resources, or environmental education.
The ideal candidate will have a background in forestry and dendrology, and an understanding of the planting, care and maintenance of trees.
Duties Description This position with NYS DEC combines work with the Urban & Community Forestry Program and the more rural Trees for Tribs Program at a landscape level to protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed from current and future threats, including storm events, pollution and other human activity. There are five targeted communities: Alfred, Elmira, Cortland, Binghamton, and Oneonta. Tasks include:
• Cultivate community and build relationships within the targeted communities
• Educate the communities about the benefits of urban forests and riparian buffers
• Assist in finding sites for urban and riparian tree planting and assist with coordination of tree planting events in each of the communities
• Teach the communities how to plant their urban and riparian forests.
• Travel to the five communities
• After the trees have been planted in each community, teach the communities how to maintain their urban and riparian forests, and teach communities how to inventory and maintain healthy forests.
• Offer iTree training meetings for each community to track and report canopy establishment for communities
• Create an educational awareness program
• Assist communities in creating Forest Management Plans that will guide and direct future tree planting and maintenance activities.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment ending no later than 3/31/19. Program needs will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to 3/31/19. Actual work schedule may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
