Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental health, environmental science, food science, food technology, physical science, or public health or a closely related field and eight years of experience in a major program involving the inspection and regulation of food processing, manufacturing, labeling, grading and packaging operation which much have included three years in a high level administrative capacity involving responsibility and oversight for the program.

Experience Substitution: J.D. or Master’s degree may substitute for one year of specified experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specified experience.

Education Substitution: An additional four years of specified experience or an Associate’s degree in specified fields and an additional two years of specified experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree.

Division of Food Safety and Inspection:

The Division of Food Safety and Inspection provides a vital service that is critical to maintaining the safety of the food supply in New York State from the producer to the consumer.

The Food Safety and Inspection Division is the Department’s largest division. The Division currently issues licenses to a variety of manufacturing food/drink-based businesses, food warehouses, slaughter houses, rendering plants, animal feed and retail establishments across New York State. Once a business is licensed, it can expect the Division to help ensure its proper operations through a variety of activities, including but not limited to: unannounced sanitary inspections, sampling of food products for analysis by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory, investigation of consumer complaints or food borne illnesses, seizure of food products and verification of product labeling.

Job Summary:

If you are a forward-thinking leader with expertise in food safety, then this is the right opportunity for you! You will lead a dedicated staff of employees to implement food safety programs within New York State. You will provide the overall leadership of the Division as well as oversee, plan, develop and implement strategies and programs to mitigate food safety risks across New York State. Additionally, as the Director you will develop and maintain strong connections with academia, external associations and industry experts to continually enhance expertise for the changing landscape.

The position is located at 10B Airline Drive, Albany NY 12235 but will have statewide oversight. This is a non-competitive, management/confidential position that offers a competitive starting salary of $119,698/year with an excellent benefit package. The benefit package includes medical, dental, and vision benefits; optional enrollment in deferred compensation plan; a State retirement option; and generous paid leave benefits which includes 12 State holidays per year.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Advises the Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets on the formulation of policy relative to the Department's responsibilities for statewide management of the Division's programs.
•Participates in formulating new legislation and regulations in the above-mentioned areas and takes appropriate action to secure compliance with existing law and regulations.
•Supervises the activities of the programs within the Division and of staff in the three regional areas working on matters relating to the above-mentioned areas.
•Coordinates with and, when appropriate, interfaces with other state departments, federal agencies, commissions, working groups and advisory boards concerned with matters addressed by the Division's programs.
•Performs all other executive functions required for the effective leadership, management and administration of the Division's programs including budgeting and planning, program evaluation, performance evaluations, and reporting.

Additional Comments Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
