Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must be admitted to the New York State bar. Excellent writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills are required. Prior federal and/or state court civil litigation experience, including experience with civil litigation and discovery, is a plus.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking to hire a bright, dynamic, motivated attorney for a paid fellowship in its Litigation Bureau in the New York City office. This fellowship offers an attorney who wants to litigate the opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on civil litigation experience. The fellowship will be a one (1) year appointment, with the possibility of a one (1) year renewal, at the discretion of the OAG.
The Litigation Bureau defends the State of New York and its agencies and officers in state and federal courts in civil actions and proceedings relating to civil rights, education, social services, public employment, public health, law enforcement, corrections, state finance, insurance, taxation, and other litigated matters arising out of state operations, legislation and public policy.
The Litigation Bureau Fellows serve as key parts of an experienced and collaborative legal team in an organization that values their contributions, and invests in their professional growth and career development. They are expected to have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of matters in a number of different subject areas, including large, complex actions, as well as their own individual cases. Their responsibilities may include drafting motion papers, appearing in court, taking and defending depositions, participating in trials, conducting document review, handling other aspects of discovery, and negotiating settlements.
