Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of post-bar practice experience, which includes a minimum of three (3) years of demonstrable trial experience in New York State courts of record or equivalent. A strong candidate would have experience in a litigation practice under the New York Civil Practice Law and Rules and familiarity with practice in the Court of Claims. It is also desirable, but not necessary, that candidates have knowledge of the State land acquisition process [i.e. EDPL]. Knowledge of mortgage foreclosure actions, quiet title proceedings, evictions, and encroachment proceedings is a plus. This position requires some travel throughout the state with an emphasis on handling eminent domain matters in the New York District of the Court of Claims.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The Real Property Bureau in the New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an experienced attorney to join its Hauppauge, Long Island office as an Assistant Attorney General. The Bureau provides legal assistance to New York State agencies in connection with the acquisition and disposition of public land. The Bureau represents the State in court proceedings involving disputes over the State's title to land acquired for public use and in actions contesting the amount of money the State must pay in the condemnation of private property under the Eminent Domain Procedure Law (EDPL). The Bureau also defends state real property cases, which are venued statewide.
