Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Duties Description 1. Processing Fishery Data
- Collecting and reviewing fishing vessel trip reports (VTRs) submitted by New York State fishermen
- Contacting fishermen for needed corrections to VTRs
- Entering fishery data into a database and conducting quality audits on entered data.
- Sorting/scanning/filing/storing of VTRs as required.
- Assisting with other office work as needed, such as mailings and answering phones.
- Normal office hours are 8:30-5:00.
2. Field Work
- Assisting in field research in the event that other offices need assistance. Field project activities include going out on boats of various sizes, beach seining, hauling fish/crab/lobster traps, trawling (both day trips and overnight trips), and visiting fish markets. Field days often start early in the morning (5 or 6 AM) at various locations, such as our maintenance facility in Ridge, NY, where we then depart for the day’s sampling location
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 30 pounds.
Seasonal, hourly appointment ending no later than 3/31/2019. Program needs will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to 3/31/2019. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements will be discussed at the interview.
