Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment Qualifications: One year of permanent Competitive or 55-b/c Service as a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1.

Provisional Appointment: If there is no appropriate eligible list of at least three people willing to accept permanent appointment for this geographic location, the Department may nominate a qualified person for a provisional appointment under the provisions of Section 65 of the Civil Service Law.

To be considered for this position, the applicant must be scheduled to take the upcoming Farm Products Grading Inspector 1 exam to be held on December 1, 2018.

Candidates appointed provisionally must take the scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, on December 1, 2018 and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained.

Provisional Minimum Qualifications:
Either 1. Two years of full-time professional experience* inspecting farm products for a state or federal agency;
Or 2. One year of full-time professional experience* inspecting farm products for a state or federal agency and 60 college credits;
Or 3. 60 college credit hours which includes 18 credit hours in: agriculture business, agronomy, animal science, biology science, botany, conservation, dairy science, entomology, environmental health, fishery or aquaculture, food marketing, food science, food services technology, horticulture (including fruit and vegetable science), microbiology, nutrition or dietetics, poultry science, science lab technology or zoology.

*NOTE: Full-time professional experience in a position inspecting farm products must include taking samples of various farm products and grading for quality and/or condition according to state, federal, or company commodity standards, and issuing state or federal certificates.

Your college credit must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. 3. Travel Requirements: Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area of assignment. Appointees to these positions may be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. If the position requires that you operate a motor vehicle, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.

4. In order to perform the duties of a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1, you will be required to obtain a state or federal license/authorization to inspect and grade an appropriate farm product.

5. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.

6. New York State residence is not required.

Duties Description Inspect various farm products at shipping, processing, and receiving points to determine and certify the grade, condition and/or size for the commodity; inspect shell eggs for grade and size; conduct sampling of farm products for various USDA or FDA Government Agencies, conduct Feed Investigations/Pet Food Sampling; conduct audits for Good Agricultural Practices, Good Handling Practices, and Country of Origin Labeling; conduct custom slaughterhouse inspections; conduct inspections of controlled atmosphere rooms for apples; and ensure that products reaching the consumer meet standards and requirements of New York State Branding Laws.
