Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Current DOH employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as a Public Health Nutritionist 1 (G22); OR New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent- permanent competitive service in a title at or above a G20 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The preferred candidates would have progressively responsible professional work experience in a large, multi-faceted public health nutrition program with excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills and a strong command of public health as it relates to child and maternal nutrition. Must be able to work independently and handle multiple priorities.


Duties Description The Public Health Nutritionist 1 (PHN1) will report to the PHN2 in the Nutrition Section within the Bureau of Supplemental Food Programs (BSFP). BSFP administers the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. The Nutrition Section is responsible for the management of WIC Program nutrition and health services; focusing on nutrition education; obesity prevention, breastfeeding, and healthy lifestyle promotion. Activities include nutrition research; breastfeeding promotion and support; policy and procedure development, analysis and implementation of state and federal regulations; nutrition assessment, risk and education; WIC food package and formulary implementation, training services, and program evaluation. The PHN1 will be involved in a variety of these activities, as well as the implementation of the new Management Information System (NYWIC) and electronic benefit transfer (e-WIC). The PHN1 will also coordinate nutrition-related activities and policies/procedures with other units within BSFP, Division of Nutrition and other programs within the NYS Department of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other WIC State agencies, and community-based organizations/coalitions.

Additional Comments Permanent or Contingent-Permanent, full-time, competitive appointment. Statewide travel, including to areas that may not be served by public transportation, may be required. Current registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD)/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) as defined above must be maintained for continued employment as a Public Health Nutritionist 1.
