Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If a viable list does not exist a provisional appointment may be made. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
In order to be considered for provisional appointment:
PROMOTIONAL: you must be a qualified employee of New York and have one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Junior Engineer, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetic), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
OPEN COMPETITIVE:
Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;
Or 3. an associate’s degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics AND TWO years of experience listed above in #1;
Or 4. a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, or electronics** issued by a regionally accredited college or university and TWO years of experience listed above in #1.
** Certificates from Trade or Technical Schools will be accepted only if they are institutions that are regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education as following acceptable educational practices.
Duties Description Principal Engineering Technicians in the Design Group provide technical support of engineering activities on Design projects.
As a Principal Engineering Technician, you would perform complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas. These activities might include preparing written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies and equipment, preparing plans and or details utilizing CADD software, developing or reviewing contract plans and specifications, and being an assistant on a survey crew. You may supervise lower-level technicians in such areas as design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing. Additionally, you may plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop testing equipment and procedures. You may also be expected to use various computer applications in the performance of your duties.
Specific program assignments and duties will be discussed at the time of your interview.
Responsibilities also may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
