Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology botany, land surveying and forest biology,
OR
one (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Duties Description The work area will be the State Forests in St. Lawrence County
containing approximately 65,000 acres of diverse hardwoods and conifer plantations. The forestry technician will assist the DEC forestry staff with the management of these lands primarily doing the following tasks: Principal duties may include some or all of the following:
• Conduct various forest measurements and collect inventory plot data using: map and compass, a hand-held data collector and GPS unit, BAF prism, clinometer, Biltmore stick, data sheets, and other related forestry equipment, using standard procedures.
• Input field data into the State Forest inventory program.
• Assist with inventory plot layout, stand type mapping, and stand management recommendations using ArcMap.
• Assist with public education/presentations.
• Assist with various Unit Management Planning projects.
• Assist Foresters in marking timber sales based upon a written prescription, and performing timber volume calculations.
Essential skills include:
• Tree identification
• Tree diameter and height measurement
• GPS navigation
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions.
Seasonal hourly appointment with a duration of 3 months from appointment date. Actual work schedule and duties may vary and will be discussed at interview. Please include a copy of your transcripts with your application materials.
