Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have two years of experience* in the visitor/customer service environment in a cultural institution.
*Substitution: College study may be substituted for up to two years of the general experience on the basis of 30 semester credit hours being equal to one year of qualifying service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Early childhood and/or elementary school program experience; OR
• Two years of experience developing and/or implementing educationally-based programming in a cultural institution.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Visitor Services Assistant 1 position in the New York State Museum (NYSM). The NYSM serves the lifelong educational needs of New Yorkers and visitors through its collections, exhibitions, scholarship, programs, media and publications in science, history, anthropology, and art. The incumbent of this position will perform various duties such as welcoming and educating visitors and groups and interpreting exhibits within the NYSM. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prepare and present interpretive talks, programs, and activities for diverse audiences;
• Conduct tours of exhibits and facilitate upcoming events, programs, and exhibitions;
• Inform NYSM Security and State Police of any threats to public safety, health and/or NYSM property;
• Register, confirm, greet and orient all school and group visits;
• Support school-based educational programs through informal, gallery-based educational experiences;
• Provide on-the-job training for new staff and volunteers;
• Represent audience needs and Visitor Services staff concerns on NYSM committees; and
• Support the Administrator on Duty with the collection and documentation of donations on Saturdays and Sundays.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of college credit hours and/or experience will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. The work schedule for this position includes hours of either 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM or 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Wednesday-Sunday, including holidays, and occasional overtime.
* Leads to a maximum salary of $42,895 based on annual performance advances.
