Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Duties Description Non-game bird projects: including monitoring, management, and supporting regulatory review
Winter Raptor Surveys (October -April)
-Recruiting and coordinating volunteers
-Scouting survey sites: Using ArcGIS to make maps for surveyors and updating data sheets
-Conducting surveys: prepare survey point and field usage shapefiles
-Monitoring E-bird for short-eared owl locations
-Communication with volunteers
-Data entry and Quality Control
Grassland Bird Surveys (May -August)
-Coordinate with biologists to determine survey sites and priorities
-Organizing maps and loading GPS
-Conduct surveys
-Quality check data entry and complete site summaries
-Submit tracked species observations
-Coordinate with biologists to inform planned mowing on Wildlife Management Areas
Bald Eagle Monitoring (November – June)
-Assist with updating eagle maps in ArcGIS
-Confirming new bald eagle nest reports and obtaining GPS coordinates
-Monitoring a subset of eagle nests for productivity and/or movements
Additional Comments Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with GIS mapping.
• Experience with Avian identification (both visual and vocalizations).
• Comfortable speaking to groups.
Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and/or work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 3/31/20. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to date listed. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
