Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's Degree and four years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and three years of professional research experience in that field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and one year of such experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. A Master of Science or higher degree in Public Health, Physical or Atmospheric Sciences or related field is preferred.
Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the following fields: mobile source and biomass emissions, ultrafine particles, health effects and toxicology, aerosol instrumentation, data analysis and statistics, climate change, environmental justice, community outreach, and STEM education.
Duties Description Under the general direction and supervision of a Research Scientist IV (Chief, Emissions Measurement Research Section), the incumbent will carry out the assigned tasks independently, and initiate research work consistent with the Division goals and regulatory framework. The incumbent will assist in the development of technical reports and publications for use in regulatory proceedings, as well as participate in collaborations with the Department’s research partners. The incumbent will demonstrate such capabilities by undertaking independent work and representing the Division at scientific, technical and policy meetings. The Research Scientist III will be responsible for conducting research as part of two current section programs:
• South End Neighborhood Air Quality Initiative.
• Joint research on biomass emissions conducted by DEC, DOH, and Brookhaven National Labs as well as on any future research programs conducted by the section.
The incumbent will be working in coordination with other Research Scientists in the Section under the supervision of the Section Chief on the following multi-disciplinary tasks:
• Conduct hands-on experimental research in both laboratory and field environments for the measurement of ultrafine particles and associated unregulated pollutants.
• Design experiments and field measurement projects to address areas of research focus for the section and policy relevance for the Bureau including near-roadway environments and biomass emissions.
• Analyze experimental data from research conducted by the section, including working collaboratively with the Department’s research partners as well as on research conducted independently by the Department.
• Prepare technical reports and manuscripts on research findings for peer-reviewed journals and actively participate in professional workshops and conferences.
• Continue and expand the Department’s research in the area of particle measurement metrics, such as Lung-Deposited Surface Area.
• Conduct community outreach and education with a focus on near-roadway and Environmental Justice communities.
• Keep abreast of policy developments and technical literature in the following areas to inform the section’s research planning: climate change, health effects and toxicology, and environmental justice.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime and overnight travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 15 pounds.
