High School diploma and two years of experience in the design, repair, maintenance, operation, and calibration of sophisticated electrical and electronics equipment for scientific research or experiments for educational purposes.
Duties Description The primary responsibilities of the Laboratory Equipment Designer (Electronics) with the Bureau of Air Quality Surveillance's Southern Monitoring Section will be to ensure the proper design, operation and maintenance of air monitoring equipment, including pilot testing of new equipment, at multiple locations in the New York City Metropolitan area. The operation of monitoring equipment must meet detailed performance and collection efficiencies and is therefore under a constant set of performance demands that require routine, sometimes daily, oversight. The Laboratory Equipment Designer is the primary individual for taking the necessary steps to design and ensure the reliable operation of the equipment installed at these sites; working with research staff to develop and operate air monitoring systems and solve complex problems associated with them. The Laboratory Equipment Designer will evaluate air monitoring data from monitors and special air studies to insure data availability and accuracy to ensure proper operation of equipment; provide physical and technical assistance to field technicians; and, assist in the design, implementation and operation of activities associated with special air monitoring projects. Assistance with ongoing scientific research will be required, as well as coordination and interaction with scientists and research personnel within the Department and other air monitoring organizations and the public.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel and overtime may be required.
Essential Functions:
• Must be capable of handling the standard tools of electricians and have an understanding of electrical systems to be able to troubleshoot these systems at monitoring sites.
• Must have experience with electrical communication systems to be able to install, troubleshoot and repair systems at monitoring sites.
• Must be capable of handling standard construction tools.
• Must be able to drive a truck or van and capable of loading and unloading vehicles.
• Must be able to operate a computer and possess knowledge of required technical computer programs.
• Must be able to write correspondence and reports.
• Must be able to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds and climb ladders.
