Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications • A degree in wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, natural resource management,
environmental studies, or a relevant discipline, such as conservation biology, etc.
• Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach
to solving environmental challenges.
• Familiarity with white-tailed deer, ticks and tick-borne diseases.
• Experience with plant identification, familiarity with invasive species a plus.
• A working knowledge of conducting field surveys and ecological monitoring methods.
• Knowledge and familiarity of GPS/GIS
• Backcountry orienteering and Leave No Trace experience a plus.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Duties Description NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on Long Island is working to manage deer impacts in its regional parks on the island. Several parks have implemented the “four-poster” feeding station program to help combat tick-borne diseases. To study its efficacy, we are hiring a Deer Management Technician to collect data on the white-tailed deer population, its
environmental impacts and local tick populations.
The Deer Management Technician will report to Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and travel to other State Parks on Long Island using an agency vehicle.
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Conducting tick surveys in State Parks using a flagging method; collecting, counting and
identifying ticks to species and life stage
• Entering field data into database
• Mapping and maintaining tick survey grids and transects
• Communicating with park managers and staff regarding tick and deer management
• Assisting with vegetation surveys to monitor deer impacts in parks
• Assisting with nighttime deer population surveys
• Taking detailed field notes
• Writing end-of-season reports and data analysis
• Flexible schedule strongly preferred (some long days and/or evenings).
Additional Comments Work conditions include uneven terrain, heat, cold, and exposure to poison ivy, thorns, ticks, and biting insects. Appropriate protective equipment will be provided.
