Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Either 1: Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND a qualifying bachelors degree or higher as listed below*;

OR

2. Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one year of engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroad, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.

*Qualifying degrees: Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Selected candidate will be required to take the Civil Service Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation) examination and obtain a reachable score on the resulting eligible list in order to be appointed permanently.

OR

3. FOR 70.1 TRANSFER:

The candidate must have one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service in a TITLE eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law (which cannot be to a title more than two salary grades higher than the eligible title).



Duties Description As an Assistant Engineer, you would perform intermediate level engineering activities within the construction group.
-inspect and document the condition of each NYSTA Albany Division Bridge/sign/retaining wall/bridge culvert/high mast light tower, on a cyclical basis under the direct supervision of a licensed PE-1
-Performs non destructive testing in the field, such as, sounding of concrete and the use of D-meter and die penetrant. Field work includes accessing all areas of each structure which may involve the use of ladders, aerial lifts and/or under bridge inspection units.
-Collects field data and digital photos into comprehensive inspection reports using a variety of computer programs.

**Preferred qualifications**
Have at least 3 years bridge experience in design, construction, inspection, or other bridge related work. Proficient in micro station, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office

Additional Comments Field Assignments include a car for transportation for travel during April through November. Location varies between the field Office if assigned to a project and Albany Division HQ office when not assigned.
