Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Permanent service in this title or one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-11 or higher and otherwise eligible for transfer. To qualify for transfer under Section 70.4 of Civil Service Law, you must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title allocated to SG-11 or higher, a Bachelor’s or higher degree in Correctional Studies, Criminal Justice, Criminal Science, Criminology, Forensics, Justice Studies, Law Enforcement, Public Justice, or Sociology, AND a passing score on the PCO or PATT exam. Duties Description The Criminal Justice Program Specialist 1/Trainee reports to an Associate Training Technician (Police) within the Office of Public Safety. The incumbent performs day-to-day functions associated with the maintenance of the Central State Registry of Police and Peace Officers. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Maintenance of the Central State Registry of Police and Peace Officers (Executive Law 845)
o Maintenance of registry of all duly appointed Police Officer and Peace Officers in NYS.
o Reviewing new Police Officer and Peace Officer appointments pursuant to statutory requirements (General Municipal Law, Criminal Procedure Law).
o Performance of annual validation of records for some 181,000 active law enforcement officers from over 2,000 employers as well as over 1,000,000 archival records.
• Administration of peace officer pistol purchase verifications (Executive Law 845)
o Validate the identity of, and completion of mandated training, certain peace officers attempting to purchase firearms without a pistol license.
o Review and processing of forms transferred to DCJS from the New York State Police for completion and return.
o Validation of individual registry or training information on specific applicant.
• Assist in Regulatory Compliance Activities
o Assist as requested in the creation of detailed timelines, interview notes and analysis of inquiries of instances of non-compliance with applicable laws, rules and/or regulations.

Additional Comments This is a two-year traineeship leading to Criminal Justice Program Specialist 1, SG-18.
